Homegrown Fruit Trees Call For Suitable Care
Any garden can be made more appealing if you plant a fruit tree. You can find that wondrous time in spring when the dead twigs of the winter season erupt into perfumed blossoms which will become the ripe fruits of autumn.
You will not need 'green fingers' to be able to successfully cultivate fruit trees in your garden. Maintaining the trees in good shape is because of a few simple processes that anyone can do.
Autumn Through Spring
You should place a protective mesh around the base of young fruit trees in particular. This can prevent rats and rabbits gnawing at the bark in winter which they will attempt to do when their normal food items are in short supply.
If your garden gets plenty of snow, the trunks of young fruit trees in particular should be painted with a white latex paint diluted 50% with water. This will stop the trunk heating up in the rays of reflected sunlight and causing damage.. The bark of fruit trees may be cracked by cold air and especially cold winds. Cracks and fissures in the bark are found by harmful insects which then hide in them and present a threat to the health of your tree.
As winter turns to spring, you can do a bit of pruning preferably on a calm day when the air temperature is at least 4 deg C. Provide them with a pleasing shape while using garden shears. Make some incisions to open the crown of the tree and to fix the straight limbs from about 10 to 15 centimeters.
Keep your tree free of dead or diseased branches by cutting them off with a clean cut. As soon as any shoots appear trim them off too. Do not cut the bottom branches that develop horizontally, as those have the potential of carrying fruits. Use special devices to check the heights of the trees and then cut the vertical branches to have the same length as the horizontal ones. This will ensure the maximum yield of fruit.
Watering your own tree is essential. A tree struggling by insufficient water is at the mercy of diseases and insect pests during the crucial period when the buds break in spring. This is critical if you want to have delicious fruit growing in spring and summer.
Employ supports to steer the branches to make sure they grow straight. The branches that expand horizontally need to receive the most light, since they will produce more fruits this way. The fruit bearing future of your trees might be increased by using a device that will physically open out the tree; another way of doing this is by roping your trees together. The tree should not be interfered with in this way until the age of four however.
Pollination is the most important part of the growing process. While the fruits are growing, you can increase its efficiency by applying a special substance (usually available from your local store) to the trees that attracts the bees. It is recommended to add this to the trees only after sundown, or in the early morning.
