Dental diseases primarily consist of two major categories namely tooth decay and gum diseases also known as gingivitis. The bacteria that are present in the plaque which forms on the teeth and gums are responsible for these dental diseases.
You need to brush your teeth twice a day in the morning as well as night before going to bed, clean the teeth on the sides with dental floss and rinse your mouth properly to remove food particles.
Always ensure there is no plaque formation on the teeth and keep cleaning on all sides. You can run few tests at home to determine if there is plaque collected on your teeth.
You can buy few chewing tables with red dye that are available and use them while at home to test. The tablet is properly chewed for a few minutes so that the tablet dissolves in the saliva and the dye spreads through the teeth and settles down on the plaque too. Then you rinse the mouth with water and use a dental mirror to check out the teeth and gums. Wherever plaque is deposited, you will see the pink stain on the plaque. Next thing to do is to concentrate on those spots and brush to remove the plaque.
Besides this simple test, you can also follow another method to test your teeth for plaque at home. Get a fluorescent solution that is available at the pharmacy and use it to gargle and rinse your mouth at least three times. You can now spit the solution, rinse your mouth with water and inspect your teeth using special ultraviolet plaque torch available for this purpose and you will se orange spots wherever plaque is present.
By brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and cleaning teeth using dental floss you will have found the ideal solution to this problem.
It is important that you pay little attention to the toothpaste that you are using. The toothpaste you buy should contain a small amount of fluoride that can help you keep your teeth clean and prevent decay. Of course you can let your children choose the flavor they like best. But then buy small tubes and do not buy family size packs. For fluoride tends to get dried up and the toothpaste can get hard after a while. With smaller tubes, the toothpaste remains fresh and effective.
You oral health is dependant upon your diet too. The sugar contained in the sweet dishes and foods that we eat daily like sweets, chocolates, sugars, soft drinks, pastries and honey etc can cause dental decay.
While the quantity of sugars that we consume on daily basis is bad for the body health, the frequency of consumption of these foods is bad for the teeth.
It is good for your body as well as your teeth to eat natural foods like fruits, veggies, greens, cereals, nuts and dry fruits that give you sufficient nutrition as well as do not affect your teeth.
